The Langa of Barbaresco

The area where Barbaresco DOCG is produced is composed of 4 communes, all located in the eastern Langa. The area faces the Roero district and extends to the hills of the province of Asti.

History and arts

A short trip takes you from Alba to the small hamlet of S. Rocco Seno d’Elvio and here is where the production area of this prestigious red wine commences, right where the Roman Emperor Publio Elvio Pertinace (126-193 AD) was born. Here the hillsides are literally covered in splendid vineyards. The road continues up the ridge to the township of Treiso from where one can enjoy breathtaking views. The famous local author, Beppe Fenoglio, would often come up here for inspiration.

The township of Barbaresco is dominated by a high medieval tower built of red brick on a sheer cliff that falls vertically into the river Tanaro below. The tower was built in the year 1000 as defense against Saracen invaders, and reaches 36 metres in height. The four corners face the cardinal points of North, South, East and West. In this medieval heart of the town one can find the Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco.

Neive is located on the crossroads of four great wine appellations and its historic centre conserves its original medieval form, made of small cobblestoned roads which rise towards the clock tower, and elegant buildings in brickwork. This township has been included in the list of “the most beautiful hamlets in Italy” (I borghi più belli d’Italia).
