roero

The watershed between Langhe and Roero is the Tanaro river which divides two very different territories, both in terms of soil conformation and crops and landscapes.

The Rocche line, now an Ecomuseum, develops along various woods rich in mushrooms and truffles, chestnut groves and orchards dedicated to peaches, strawberries, as well as the Arneis, Nebbiolo, Favorita and Barbera vineyards.

The name Roero derives from an important and well-known family from Asti, awarded with many fiefdoms and fortresses in the area.

History and art

The itinerary begins in Govone, dominated by the scenic royal castle, residence of Carlo Felice. Another beautiful baroque castle is that of nearby Magliano Alfieri, former residence of Vittorio Alfieri and home to the Museum of Plaster Ceilings. Castellinaldo, a short distance away, is home to the Bottega del Vino with its towering medieval castle. Also not to be missed is the tall church of San Servasio isolated on a hill towards the town of Castagnito, nestled on the hill between Tanaro and Borbore. In Guarene the grandiose eighteenth-century castle has a beautiful Italian garden and in Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, you can also visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Continuing backwards along the Tanaro river, you come across Piobesi and Corneliano, on which the ancient decagonal tower from the 1300s stands. Then Monticello with the intact Conti Roero castle and the ancient parish church of San Ponzio and, finally, Santa Vittoria d'Alba with the square tower from which you can enjoy an unmissable panorama, in addition to the castle and the cycle of precious 15th century frescoes kept in San Francesco. Immersed in the woods of its fortress, Pocapaglia preserves a valuable portal by Sansovino near the castle. Along the fortresses you reach Sommariva Perno, with the castle of “Bela Rosin” (the favorite of King Vittorio Emanuele II) and, following, the isolated tower of Montaldo Roero, the beautiful castle of Monteu Roero and the scary fortress of Santo Stefano Roero. It is worth a stop at the neo-Gothic manor and the Romanesque church of Sant'Antonino a Baldissero, as well as the only Ornithological Observatory in Piedmont, to immerse yourself in bridwatching and the study of avifauna. From Montà one of the sweetest tourist paths emerges, the Strada del Miele, another typical local product, while Canale is the capital of Roero and hosts the Regional Enoteca del Roero, with a renowned restaurant attached. Heading towards Alba, you pass through Vezza with the Villa (historic centre) perched on the high panoramic spur and the interesting Naturalistic Museum as well as the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Boschi with fifteenth-century paintings. The village of Pollenzo, the ancient Pollentia which preserves Roman ruins, today presents itself with a splendid square in neo-Gothic style. The first University of Gastronomic Sciences is also located here as well as the estate of Carlo Alberto of Savoy. Pollenzo is a hamlet of Bra, developed on the rock, where the Zizzola, the symbol of the town, the medieval Palazzo Traversa, home to the Museum of Archeology and History of Art, the Town Hall and next to it the Palazzo Mathis, the Museum are built of Natural History Craters and the late-baroque Church of Santa Chiara.
